Guide to North County and La Jolla

This stretch of coastline is the epitome of the Southern California lifestyle. Driving up the 101 you will find beach city after beach city after beach city; which gives you plenty of dining options, attractions, and beautiful sights to see!

Duke’s La Jolla

Named after the infamous Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaiian olympic gold medalist & the father of modern surfing. The restaurant is two stories with sweeping coastal views and Hawaiian inspired cuisine. The upstairs patio seating is a more casual dining experience, but it has a better view. Sit upstairs and bring your sunnies!

Crab Catcher

Market fresh seafood on the cliffs of La Jolla cove. I absolutely adore this place. It is on the fancier side, so if you are looking for a formal dining experience this is the place to go. If you are looking for something more causal but still want the fine dining, they a have a great patio and happy hour menu!

Trendy, upscale restaurant that specializes in surf n’ turf and oysters. You won’t be disappointed. They have an extensive menu, but the fish tacos are my favorite!

If you happen to be there around the 4th of July, I would recommend going here and getting there early. The Del Mar fairgrounds puts on a firework show that can be seen from the restaurant.

Carruth Cellars

Carruth Cellars has two locations, one in Solana Beach and the other in Carlsbad. They source their grapes from Northern and Central California and have produced many award winning wines. They also put on winery events, like: movie nights, yoga, live music, etc. It is a fun place to visit and hang out!

Culture Brewing Company

Culture Brewing Company just opened their second location in Ocean Beach. They have a great selection of microbrews (I believe 36), as well as a taco truck that frequents the brewery. They are pet friendly, so bring your pooches and grab a beer!

VG’s Donuts

Not just a donut shop, they also have a plethora of pastries, cookies, pies, etc. But let’s be real, if you are like me, it is about the DONUTS! The maple glazed are my go-to, but seriously everything I have had here has been amazing. Their goods are baked fresh twice daily, so go grab a sweet little piece of heaven!

Union Kitchen & Tap

Trendy restaurant, with modern-rustic decor. They have a great selection of beer that rotates constantly and American inspired small plates. They serve food until 11 PM, so they are open later than a lot of other dining options. The chill atmosphere makes you want to hang out and enjoy yourself.

La Costa Farm Fruit Stand

Behold, the long lost fruit/veggie stand. It is seriously like finding the holy grail, if this is the sort of thing you like. For me, it is. They have a lot of farm fresh options and specialty items at really great prices. Their strawberries are some of the best that I have had.

The Belly Up

Intimate venue, but a Solana Beach staple. It is always a fun night at The Belly Up. They have a rotating lineup of local acts and talent, and you feel as if you can reach out and touch them. Well, you pretty much can (I am creepy, I know). Great, lively place if you are looking for live music and a fun time.

If you have kiddos, take them here. It is like a child dream land that is more budget friendly than Disneyland. Legoland has so many things to do and see: waterpark, aquarium, rides, etc. you will be spending all day here, so be prepared for a lot of fun!

Area: Carlsbad
Address: 1 Legoland Dr, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Cedros Design District

This is what I live for. Located in Solana Beach on Cedros Avenue, the Cedros Design District is 2.5 blocks long, with 80+ shops that you will find no where else. The majority of the shops have an eclectic inventory where you can find those one of a kind pieces to complete your home.

An internationally known surf spot in Encinitas, CA. If you don’t surf, the beach offers a great opportunity to watch and hang out. When the tide is out, you can actually walk out pretty far before it drops off. If you are looking for a beach day, there are some shaded picnic areas or you can soak up the sun while watching the surfing talent.

Oceanside Pier

At 1,942 feet long, the Oceanside Pier is one of the longest piers on the west coast (Ocean Beach pier is the longest). A great site to see! You can take a stroll or even go fishing off the pier.
